5th Grade Writing Prompts with Pictures – Narrative Writing Sentence Starters
How to motivate 4th or 4th graders, especially reluctant writers, to get the creative juices flowing?!
Every student is different and when we’re dealing with this preteen age it can be a challenge to engage writers in
the writing process. So over the years, I have found the following tips to work wonders!
- Give students a choice – the opportunity to choose their own writing topics or avoid writer’s block, provide writing prompts that they can choose from. They are much more likely to be engaged in the writing process if they feel like they’ve had a choice in the topic!
- Use Writing Prompts: Provide engaging writing prompts or sentence starters to get students to build on the idea or topic. These can be related to current events, creative scenarios, or thought-provoking questions
- Provide an Print-Rich Environment: Display how-to narrative anchor charts, vocabulary walls, dictionaries, word of the day, word or week, writer’s workshop, writing center
- Read Aloud: No matter how old students are, everyone loves a read aloud! Put aside 10 or 15 minutes daily to read a mentor text or a novel that students can immerse themselves into and enjoy the experience of a story teller reading to them.
- Role Model Good Writing: Share your own enthusiasm for writing and think alouds – so students know exactly what the writing process is…a process!
