HOW TO TEACH PROCEDURAL WRITING TO GRADE 1
What is Procedural Writing?
Procedural writing, also known as instructional or how-to writing, is a form of writing that provides a set of step-
by-step instructions or directions on how to perform a specific task or activity. Its primary purpose is to guide
readers through a process, enabling them to achieve a desired outcome.
Procedural writing typically follows a clear and logical sequence, ensuring that each step is presented in the correct
order. The language used in procedural writing is often precise, concise and focused on providing clear directions.
This type of writing can be found in various contexts, including recipes, science experiments and craft projects.

HOW TO TEACH PROCEDURAL WRITING TO GRADE 1
- Begin by explaining what procedural writing is and why it is important. Emphasize that it is a type of writing used to explain how to do or make something in a step-by-step manner.
- Choose a fun activity that will engage students and hook their attention, for example How to Make Pizza…kids love pizza!
- Use an anchor chart to brainstorm the sequential steps: Write down numbered steps ensuring that the sequence is clear and logical. Invite students to add their ideas and to ask clarifying questions about each step.
- Model the writing process with procedure writing examples: Show how to write a procedural text, beginning with a brief introduction of the activity, followed by a clear list of sequential steps, and a short summary of the finished recipe or product.
- Use a procedural writing graphic organizer: Provide students with graphic organizers with sequential diagrams or photos of each step. The visual aspect helps elementary students to build comprehension and structure their writing
- Provide writing prompts: Writing prompts are a great scaffold for students to use to help organize their thinking and ideas during the writing process.
