CCSSW.2.1 – Grade 2: Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.

CCSSW.2.2 – Grade 2:
Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.

CCSSW.3.1 – Grade 3:
Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.

CCSSW.3.1a – Grade 3:
Introduce the topic or text they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons

CCSSW.4.1 – Grade 4:

Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.

So why is this resource is an important part of the opinion writing curriculum?                                      Opinion writing is difficult and not an easy concept for students to jump into without the foundational understanding. Having different opinions on topics is a normal thing, therefore it is very important that students are taught correctly how to express their opinions not only verbally but in the written form. This sequenced resource will help students understand the foundations of opinion writing and as result, develop the skills to effectively express their own opinion with clarity and conviction.
