DAILY WRITING PROMPTS ENGAGE STUDENTS
Let’s face it…..daily writing can be a tedious and boring task – especially for our reluctant writers.
An interesting writing prompt acts as a creative writing springboard and often is exactly what’s
needed to get students’ creative juices flowing!
So how can we inspire our students to believe in their writing abilities so that they grown into confident and proficient writers?
HOW TO GROW DAILY WRITING PROMPT IDEAS
- Ask children to close their eyes
- Write the ‘Writing Prompt of the Day’ on the board
- ‘Open your eyes everybody and let’s read the prompt together’
- Ask your kids to add their ideas to the prompt
- ‘Hands up, what is the first thing your brain thinks of when you read this prompt?’
- Accept and write all ideas and contributions
- Ask students to begin writing without worrying about spelling, capitalization or punctuation at this stage
- The first step of writing is the ‘creative writing’ stage – editing comes afterwards (2 separate stages of writing)
- If students worry about the technicalities and structure of writing, they will enter the ‘writer’s block’ stage and then the reluctant stage
- Remind children to refer to the brainstorm board for ideas to spring board from
- Every 10 minutes or so, ask your students to put their pencils down and re-read what they’ve written from the beginning (you’ll be amazed at how many students will pick up their pencils and begin adding to their writing after the re-reading stage!)
DAILY WRITING CELEBRATION IDEAS
- Writing is a solitary activity and it should be celebrated!
- Invite students to voluntarily read their work to a peer or class audience
- The most important point of all is PUBLISHING your students’ work into a Class Book
- Tell them that they are all authors and illustrators and the Class Book will be placed in the class library, school library or loaned to other classes!
- Your students (even your most reluctant writers) will have experienced success and truly feel like authors and illustrators
PROVIDE LOTS OF WRITING PRACTICE AND WRITING PROMPTS
Provide students with ample and varied writing opportunities throughout the day and week. For example – for example: whole class, writing centers, writer’s workshop, independent writing, journal writing, daily diary writing and creative writing. Practice makes perfect progress!
