- Focus on comprehension: Encourage children to read the problem several times to understand what it’s asking for. This will help them identify key information and make it easier to solve the problem.
- Identify the math operation: Help kids identify the math operation required to solve the problem. Is it addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division? Teach them to look for keywords such as “sum,” “difference,” “product,” and “quotient” to help them identify the operation.
- Use visual aids: Visual aids such as pictures, diagrams, or manipulatives can help kids visualize the problem and make it easier to understand.
- Encourage problem-solving strategies: Teach kids different strategies for problem-solving such as making a chart, drawing a picture, or using trial and error. This will help them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Practice, practice, practice: Practice is essential to master math word problems. Provide kids with plenty of opportunities to practice solving word problems and provide feedback and support as needed.
