Why sorting and categorizing activities are important:
Learning to sort and categorize are important foundational skills that help students understand how and why objects are similar or different. This leads critical and creative thinking, where student are able to compare and contrast. This resource includes the following elements:
•Begin with the basics: Introduce colors, shapes, sizes and textures. Use pictures or objects that your students have had experience with and are familiar to.
•Use Visuals: Picture cards can also be displayed on classroom smartboard when teaching whole class explicit sorting skills. This helps students to visualize and identify the different categories.
•Whole Class Explicit Teaching of Sorting by Attributes: Show and use ‘teacher-thinkalouds’ when sorting various objects into categories. Model using sorting vocabulary that differentiates between categories. As a whole class, identify objects and narrow down to 2 categories – e.g. big or small, living or nonliving, lives in the sea or lives on land etc. After whole class, provide small group or independent practice using sorting and classifying worksheets.
•Hands-On Learning: This resource provides plenty and varied opportunities for hands-on ‘concrete’ learning, where students construct their conceptual understanding and develop vocabulary that includes: similar, different, compare, contrast etc.
