This Plant & Butterfly Life Cycle Bundle is my go-to for teaching two of the most popular (and NGSS-aligned!) life science units. Whether you’re diving into spring science, planning your next emergency sub plans, or looking for some real life science for your science center, this bundle checks every box.

It’s packed with print-and-go worksheets, short reading passages, puzzles, crafts, vocabulary cards with real images, and interactive notebook pages. Best part? You can teach integrated ELA and Science without any extra prep!

Kick Things Off with Anchor Charts + Vocabulary Walls

Start your unit by building background knowledge. The “What Plants Need” anchor chart and butterfly vocabulary cards are great visual references to hang throughout the unit. I also like to introduce new words in a mini-lesson and then use them for writing later.

Create Booklets for Independent Work

Print the plant or butterfly worksheets as mini booklets (just staple and go!) and let students work through them independently or during science centers. My students love feeling like they’re real life authors creating their own booklets…and these printable science worksheets are great for early finisher activities too.

Use the Interactive Notebooks for Reflection

Activities like “Plants Are, Plants Can, Plants Have” or the butterfly Venn diagrams are perfect for interactive notebooks. These pages help students summarize and reflect on what they’ve learned. It’s also an easy way to track growth in writing and comprehension!

Set Up Hands-On Science Centers

Use puzzles, word searches, and craftivities in a rotation! I like to put the cut and paste life cycle or stick puppet craft in a small group center. Add real photos or writing prompts for creative exploration.

Track Growth with “My Bean Diary”

This one’s a hit every year! Pair your plant life cycle lesson with a simple seed-in-a-cup experiment and let students document their bean’s growth over two weeks. They love watching it change day by day – and it’s real-world science they’ll remember.

Build in Cross-Curricular Literacy

The short reading passages in both the Plant and Butterfly Units make it so easy to integrate science into your literacy block. Students can independently read, highlight and answer questions – all while learning core science concepts…or you have the option of projecting reading passage on the smartboard for whole class instruction!

Assessment Ideas

Use student booklets, vocabulary work, and craftivities as part of your formative or summative assessment. I often save the “Draw and Label” pages or final writing prompts as a portfolio piece or parent conference sample.

Bonus tip: Use the Speaking & Listening schedule in the butterfly unit for quick partner presentations or science share-outs. It builds oral language skills and boosts science comprehension!
