Teaching Holidays Around the World in December
In today’s world, the importance of teaching holidays around the world to kids has never been more important. Fostering a tolerance of others through embracing cultural diversity can and should be an enriching experience.
I look forward to the winter months, particulary December, because not only do I get to decorate my room and teach about Christmas, but other celebrations as well, such as Kwanzaa and Hanukkah!
I introduce the concept of cultural diversity, traditions and celebrations using picture books (because picture books I believe, are a great introductory hook to any concept!) I add colorful visuals and of course display a world map on my smartboard.
Because my unit runs from the end of November through to end of December (sometimes overlaps into January), I use a range of writing prompts, graphic organizers, themed activities and hands-on crafts.
As part of our daily oral presentations, I encourage students to talk about their family holiday traditions and celebrations (food tasting is great too, but I’ve got to admit, it’s got a bit tricky at our school because of children allergies).
