Teaching informational writing does not need to be daunting – it can be fun and engaging. Informational writing is a type of writing that provides facts, details, and knowledge about a selected topic.

In first and second grade, informational writing is introduced by teaching students to organize simple fun facts into clear and coherent sentences, often using graphic organizers and visual aids to facilitate understanding.

Here is a step by step process on how to teach informative writing in an engaging way:

  1. Introduce the concept of informational writing to your students.
  2. Explain what it is and provide some examples, such as non-fiction books or informational texts
  3. Select a topic of interest, such as insects, spiders or animals, which keep students engaged throughout the writing process.
  4. Plan and research using informational texts to gather information
  5. Use writing prompts and graphic organizers which help your students to organize their ideas and structure their writing
  6. Use mentor texts: Mentor texts are great examples of informational writing that can be used to teach your students about the writing process. Use books or articles as mentor texts and help your students analyze the structure, language, and organization of the writing.
  7. Revise and edit: Encourage your students to get into the habit of revising and editing.
  8. Celebrate students’ writing by displaying on your classroom bulletin board!
