Ask any elementary teacher what is their number one stress when it comes to teaching and I guarantee you that writing Report Card Comments is right up there!

I felt the exact same until I came up with a formula that works.

So how do you write professional and succinct report card comments  for students in reading, writing, math and general?

Here is my 5 step formula:

  • Use positive language – begin with one positive student achievement in this learning area?
  • Mention the student’s effort
  • Write about an evident strength that this student shows or has achieved this semester or year
  • Next, write about one aspect that the student needs to improve on and state how it can be improved on (make it their goal)
  • Finish on a positive note to empower both student and parents

These are the steps I followed when I created these Report Card Comments About Writing, Reading, Math and Generals. I have used these over and over again in the past 10 years with minor adjustments to suit the particular student

that I am writing about. This resource has literally been an absolute time-saver and what’s more, you can simply cut and paste the comments for report cards directly into your students’ reporting templates!
