How to Writing Unit – Narrative, Informational and Opinion Writing
Teaching writing to kids is probably one of the most challenging aspects of the writing curriculum.
It is very important that it is done explicitly and in a sequential process.
The writing process consists of the following steps and yes, practice makes perfect (or as perfect progress!) –
- Model the writing process for the students, including pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing.
- Encourage prewriting activities such as brainstorming, mapping, and free writing to help students generate ideas and organize their thoughts.
- Encourage students to write their first draft focusing on ideas and less on spelling accuracy at this stage.
- Explicitly show students how to edit their work by checking for spelling and grammar accuracy, descriptive vocabulary and genre structure.
- Reread finished writing before submitting
- Invite your students to share their writing in a Sharing Circle or with a peer
7. Provide many varied opportunities to write – eg. writer’s workshop, writing centers, writing journals, reflections etc)
