Writing is a lifetime skill that requires regular practice to develop proficiency. As educators, we are faced with the challenge of presenting the writing curriculum in a fun and engaging way, so that our students remain motivated and active participants in the writing process.

Writing a letter to Santa is not only fun, but an effective and engaging writing way to provide students with a balance of creativity and structure.

Writing letters to Santa, Elf, Rudolf or any character is an ideal opportunity to not only teach letter structure, but integrate sentence structure, provide adjective examples, punctuation and grammar in the context of letter writing.

Crafting a letter to Santa requires students to sequence writing ideas, develop a beginning, middle and end text structure. Furthermore, students love the opportunity to engage with Santa and express their personal wishes, which in turn, promotes emotive writing skills.

Then there’s the element of thematic writing, which always helps students stay engaged in the writing process. Adding a theme of festivity to writing, definitely adds excitement and motivates students to want to actively participate in the writing process.

What I particularly like about letter writing is that it provides an immediate differentiation element to cater for varying learning abilities. Educators can tailor the complexity of the task to suit the developmental writing stage.
