NARRATIVE WRITING 2ND GRADE

Narrative Writing Prompts

NARRATIVE WRITING 2ND GRADE PROCESSES

Firstly, begin with a whole class discussion about narratives.
Ask the question ‘What is a narrative?’
Then co-create a brainstorm with your students and accept all idea contributions.
Next, circle the narrative key focus words on the brainstorm.
For example: imaginary story, characters, setting, event, problem, solution, fiction etc.
Then, read a narrative to your students.
Before reading, ask them to take a mental note of these important story elements.
Who is the main character?
Where is the story setting?
What is the problem of the story?
Who or what solves the problem?
During reading, stop and ask your students to think about the main character’s
traits. Are they changing as the narrative progresses? If so, why?
After reading, have your students Think-Pair-Share the story elements.
Which part of the narrative were their favorite and why?

NARRATIVE WRITING 2ND GRADE ANCHOR CHARTS

As educators, we know the importance of model writing and the whole I do, we do, you do teaching model!
And it’s even more important when it comes to teaching narrative writing.
This is such a powerful strategy as students get to hear their teacher think aloud in terms of the narrative
writing steps and ultimately get to see what a good piece of writing looks like.
Visually they have an example for their narrative writing.
I always write on anchor charts and then once done, I display my model writing in our classroom
writing center or writer’s workshop alongside my ‘Story Elements’ anchor chart.

NARRATIVE WRITING 2ND GRADE PROMPTS WITH PICTURES

For students first piece of narrative writing, I provide a narrative writing prompt  2nd grade with pictures as a scaffold.
Then I let them run with it! I tell my students that while they are writing a narrative, not to worry about spelling or punctuation.
Yes, these are certainly very important however they will be taken care of during the editing process.
Creative writing is exactly that…creative writing without any inhibitions to generating ideas.
I also tell my kids that the great thing about narrative writing is anything goes – after all it’s imaginary
fiction!
During the narrative writing unit, I ensure that my writing centers and writer’s workshops are provided
with ample writing prompts, task cards, vocabulary activities, environmental print and writing tools.
It is important that students are provided with lots of writing opportunities, after all writing is a skill
just like bike riding…the more you write the better writer you will become!
CHARACTER TRAITS IN NARRATIVE WRITING 2ND GRADE

Narrative Story Maps

After my students have got the hang of creating a character, I tell my students that when imagining a character,
think of its character traits. We use a character trait graphic organizer so students can brainstorm and
highlight the different traits.
Towards mid narrative unit, after reading lots of narratives, we talk about how most main characters
start off in the story as being shy, perhaps not popular, somewhat of an ‘underdog’ is the key to hooking in
your readers. It provides readers with an emotional connection to the character.
I also tell my students that your main character should be the one to solve the problem in the story.
Why? Because not only is the problem resolved, but the main character has grown in confidence by the end of the story!
