HOW TO TEACH WORD PROBLEMS TO 2ND GRADERS
Teaching word problems is a tricky concept because there are many steps that students need to follow to problem solve effectively.
They need to understand the mathematical vocabulary, write a number sentence, determine which operation to attach to sum, which strategy to use, work out the problem and finally answer using a number and words… that’s cognitive overload right there!
So where to start?
Step One: When it comes to word problems, it’s important to keep it simple. So, start with addition within 10 word problems. By the time we teach word problems, our students are fluent with basic facts, particularly in addition within 10. One of the key elements of teaching word problems is building a strong mathematical vocabulary – for example: understanding that altogether means addition, how many left means subtraction etc.
